Acrylic on canvas · 30 x 20 cm (12 x 8 in)

Suiren is a contemporary abstract painting inspired by the planting in and around a pond in Christ Church College gardens. Named after the Japanese word for water-lily, the work reflects the layered, reflective qualities of water, plant life and surrounding stone within a contained garden environment.

Muted stone tones provide a calm, grounding structure, against which vivid greens and reds emerge in contrast. These brighter elements suggest water-lilies and other aquatic plants, their forms shifting and dissolving across the surface. Acrylic on canvas allows for both fluid transitions and more defined marks, echoing the interplay between still water, growth and reflection.

Compact in scale yet visually engaging, Suiren offers a balanced combination of subtlety and colour. Its abstract language and natural palette make it well suited to smaller interiors, grouped displays, or commercial spaces where artwork is selected to introduce calm, texture and a connection to cultivated landscape.
