Acrylic and collage on cradled board · 84 x 59.5 cm (33 x 23 in)

Fireweed is a contemporary mixed media abstract painting inspired by rosebay willowherb along the banks of the River Thames; a plant known in North America as “fireweed” for its ability to rapidly colonise land after disturbance. Both resilient and vivid, it signals renewal, thriving in places where other growth has been cleared away.

Working in intense reds and yellows set against softer blues and greens, the composition evokes the flame-like presence of the plant at sunset, when light heightens its colour and it appears almost to glow. Layers of collage and acrylic create a textured surface where organic forms emerge and recede, suggesting both the structure of flowering stems and the shifting conditions of light along the river’s edge.

Alongside its visual presence, the work reflects the ecological role of the plant; supporting species such as the Elephant Hawk-moth and Bedstraw Hawk-moth, and quietly embedding ideas of interdependence and regeneration within an abstract language. The result is a piece that brings warmth, movement and subtle narrative depth to a space.

Fireweed is well suited to contemporary interiors, from private collections to commercial environments, where artwork is chosen to add colour, texture and a sense of connection to natural systems without literal representation.
